Squash Rules

Court: The squash court is 9.75 meters long and 6.4 meters wide, surrounded by four walls. The front wall has a service box and a top boundary line. The back wall is often used in rallies.

Equipment: A squash racket (lightweight with strings) and a small rubber ball with different levels of bounce depending on the type.

Points and Sets: Scoring follows the “rally point” system, where points can be scored regardless of who served. A set is typically played to 11 points, with a 2-point lead required to win. Matches are often played best of 3 or 5 sets.

Serve: The serve must be delivered from behind the service box and must hit the front wall above the service line. The ball must then land in the opposite service box on the other side of the court.

Gameplay: After the serve, players alternate hitting the ball against the front wall. The ball must not bounce twice on the floor or go out of bounds (the back or side walls).

Walls: Players can use the side and back walls as part of their strategy to return the ball, but the ball must always hit the front wall first.

Faults: A fault occurs if:

  • The ball fails to clear the net.
  • The ball doesn’t land in the correct area after a serve.
  • The server does not hit the front wall first or serve from the correct side.
